Friday, August 22, at 12:00 PM (Isybank Auditorium D3): Opening event of the Meeting on the theme “Mothers for Peace”, featuring Azezet Habtezghi Kidane, an Eritrean Comboni religious sister who has worked in Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Middle East, and Alessandra Buzzetti, author of the book "Beyond Borders. On Mission from Africa to the Holy Land."

Exhibition: “Called Twice. The Martyrs of Algeria” (at the Rimini Meeting)

The Rimini Meeting will host, from August 22 to 27, the exhibition “Called Twice. The Martyrs of Algeria” (Piazza A7), promoted by the Oasis Foundation and the Vatican Publishing House (Libreria Editrice Vaticana).

Curated by Alessandro Banfi, Michele Brignone, Martino Diez, Lorenzo Fazzini, Claudio Fontana, and Chiara Pellegrino, the exhibition honors the 19 martyrs of Algeria who were killed during the country’s so-called “Black Decade,” and seeks to spread awareness of their sacrifice.

Friday, August 22, at 7:00 PM (Isybank Auditorium D3): “The Gaze that Broadens Humanity: Literature as an Experience of Reality” is the theme of a dialogue between Eraldo Affinati, writer and teacher, founder of the Penny Wirton School and author of Testa, cuore e mani. Great Educators in Rome (LEV), and Paolo Malaguti, writer and teacher, author of SicutErat. The Mystery in Dialect: A Story of Plain Faith.
The event will be moderated by Letizia Bardazzi, president of the Italian Association of Cultural Centers.

Saturday, August 23, at 12:00 PM, Auditorium: Event “Lives Given. The Living Legacy of the Martyrs of Algeria.”

Speakers include:

  • Thomas Georgeon, Abbot of La Trappe Monastery in France and postulator of the cause for the beatification of the Algerian martyrs, co-author of Tibhirine Lives On. The Legacy of the Martyred Monks in Algeria with François Vayne, and Brother Luc of Tibhirine. Monk, Doctor and Martyr with Christophe Henning;

  • Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, author of the preface to the LEV book on Brother Luc;

  • Nadjia Kebour, professor at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI);

  • Lourdes Miguèlez Mattila, Augustinian missionary sister.
    The event will be introduced by Bernhard Scholz and moderated by Lorenzo Fazzini, editorial director of Libreria Editrice Vaticana.

Saturday, August 23, at 9:00 PM, Sala Neri Generali-Cattolica: Screening of the acclaimed film on the martyred monks “Of Gods and Men” (original French title: Des hommes et des dieux), directed by Xavier Beauvois.
The event will be moderated by journalist Alessandro Banfi, communication coordinator of the Oasis Foundation and curator of the exhibition “Called Twice. The Martyrs of Algeria.”

Sunday, August 24, at 1:00 PM (Sala Neri Generali-Cattolica): Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, will participate in a discussion on the theme “Communication that Builds Communion” together with writers Javier Cercas and Colum McCann.
