Johan Vincent Galtung is a Norwegian sociologist, mathematician, and the principal founder of the discipline of peace and conflict studies. He was the main founder of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) in 1959 and served as its first director until 1970. He also established the Journal of Peace Research in 1964. He is the Founder of Transcend - A Peace Development Environment Network in 1993, then of the Peace University in 2004 and also of the Transcend University Press in 2008. Galtung’s major contribution has been his mediation for peace in about 150 conflicts around the world, with success in more than 35 of his interventions, using the Transcend method of mediation. He has held various positions and responsibilities, and has been the visiting faculty to a number of universities all over the world. He has been a consultant to many international organizations like UNICEF, FAO, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, UNDP, OECD and many others. He has also served as a board member for a number of institutes, organizations and associations. He has been conferred 10 honorary doctorates and 4 honorary professorships, together with a number of other awards and prizes for his contribution to Peace. He has published a number of articles and written a number of books on the themes concerning Peace Journalism, and has also been in the editorial board for a number of journals and publications. He is fluent in Norwegian, English, German, Spanish, French and Italian.
